Compared to the sedan
, the 280SE Coupe is a rare model with a much lower production volume. It is a luxury model handcrafted one by one by skilled artisans on a dedicated production line distinct from that of the sedan;
only 5,187 units were produced in total between 1968 and 1972.Considering that approximately 90,000 units of the 280SE four-door sedan were produced, it’s easy to see just how rare and exclusive this 280SE Coupe is as a limited-production luxury vehicle.
The engine is the M130, a 2,770 cc inline-six with OHC and 180 horsepower. Equipped with a Bosch mechanical fuel injection pump, it offers outstanding reliability. Since the engine itself is lighter than an eight-cylinder, the car feels surprisingly nimble.While it is by no means a powerful engine, it runs quietly, responds well, and never feels underpowered. As long as
you maintain the oil and coolant levels properly, it is a robust unit.
It is paired with a Mercedes-built 4-speed automatic transmission with a floor-mounted shifter, which maintains a direct and smooth feel.
This vehicle is believed to have been registered in California in 1969. It was subsequently imported to Japan, where the lighting and other components were modified to European specifications. The
body color is ivory with a green top—a combination that perfectly suits a classic Mercedes.The interior is upholstered in green leather, and the wood trim is also in condition appropriate for its age. It is equipped with a sunroof and air conditioning, both original factory options from that era. Of course, there is no body corrosion.
The appeal of the 280SE Coupe lies, above all, in its beautiful body design by French designer Paul Black.Amid its classic charm, the exterior features a roof with graceful curves and rear fender lines that retain traces of the tail fins. With curved front and rear windows and an exterior that makes extensive use of chrome accents, the list of highlights is endless.
From the spacious interior, the view through the windshield is beautifully reflected on the hood, and the car offers surprisingly nimble handling and a comfortable ride. At night, the instruments glow softly against the interior, which features abundant wood and leather trim. It offers a soothing sensation that cannot be found in modern Mercedes models.
