Description
We’ve just received a 1984 Mercedes-Benz 280CE Coupe.
Produced from 1976 to 1985 as the successor to the previous-generation W114, the W123 model was the flagship of the mid-size class until the “W201” debuted in 1982.The lineup consisted of three main body styles: a 4-door sedan, a 5-door station wagon, and a 2-door coupe. Among these, the CE 2-door coupe was the model with the lowest production volume.
The W123 became an instant hit upon its release, living up to the Mercedes name as a core model. It was sold in virtually every country around the world, with total production reaching nearly 2.7 million units over the course of nine years.Of these, the coupe model was produced in much smaller numbers, with production totaling just under 100,000 units. The coupe model had a wheelbase 85 mm shorter than the sedan, and its pillars were angled more steeply, giving it a sporty appearance with a low roofline and a short cabin.
The body was a two-door pillarless hardtop; in place of a B-pillar, the structure reinforced the A-pillar, C-pillar, and roof, and was designed—even at that time—to absorb impacts at both the front and rear of the vehicle. This robust body offered superior safety, high rigidity, and excellent handling.It strikes a high-level balance between comfort and ride quality that prevents fatigue even on long drives, making it a model that fully demonstrated Mercedes-Benz’s excellence.
The engine lineup included a 4-cylinder 230 and two 6-cylinder variants: the 280C (156 PS) and the 280CE (177 PS). Only the 280CE was officially imported into Japan.The M110-type DOHC 2.8L engine, renowned for its durability, is equipped with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection; while its quietness leaves something to be desired, it was a tough and, for its time, powerful engine. Paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission, it is more than sufficient for driving in Japan.
This vehicle was sold new by Yanase in Showa 59. It is in nearly original condition, and both the engine and transmission are running smoothly. The air conditioning has been rebuilt and works well.
