Description

 We’ve just received a Mercedes 280SE 3.5 Coupe.

Based on a 1970 model in good condition, this 3.5 Coupe has been thoroughly restored, with work done on everything from the interior and exterior to the engine.
While tastes vary, it’s no exaggeration to say that the W111 Coupe itself was designed with the American market in mind—so much so that it could be called an export model for the U.S. Consequently, this particular vehicle, finished in a two-tone color scheme, is also inspired by the American specification. This car was delivered new to North America and subsequently arrived in Japan in Showa 63.

Throughout Mercedes-Benz’s history, the coupe models have been positioned as particularly high-end vehicles within the lineup. This 280SE Coupe is no exception—it was a specially crafted car, produced one by one by skilled artisans at a separate factory from the sedan production line.Consequently, production numbers were low; even combining the coupe and cabriolet variants, only a little over 4,500 units were produced, making this a rare Mercedes.

The W111 Coupe, which debuted in 1960, was built as a coupe based on the sedan model of the time, known as the “Hane-ben.”Naturally, this was an era when even Mercedes had no choice but to reflect the preferences of the American market, and just like the “Haneven” sedan, the design of this W111 Coupe is somewhat reminiscent of 1950s American cars.
In particular, the curved front and rear windows, formed by the lines extending from the roof, are a design element commonly seen in American cars of that era. It was created by Paul Black, a French designer who worked for Mercedes at the time. He was a genius who designed the so-called “vertical-headlight” Mercedes models from the 1960s through the 1970s and later went on to make a name for himself at BMW and other companies.
Neither German nor American, the Mercedes models he designed exude a unique atmosphere, which is why they still have so many fans today.

As expected, the engine is the legendary “M116” unit. It’s a 3.5L V8, OHC, producing 200馬力. While its smooth operation might not be described as powerful, I believe it suits this car’s character perfectly. The engine has had its cylinder heads overhauled, all internal water lines flushed, and the radiator and entire cooling system replaced. The entire ignition system has also been replaced and is in perfect working order. The automatic transmission shifts smoothly and powerfully, with no shift shock. The
air conditioner’s compressor has been replaced with a new one and provides powerful cooling. The alternator has also been replaced with a unit that delivers a higher amperage than the original.

The interior is the most labor-intensive part of restoring a W111 Coupe.Trying to cut corners would completely ruin the car’s luxurious atmosphere. Therefore, there’s no alternative but to have it meticulously finished by a craftsman who truly understands this car. While this inevitably requires a proportional investment of both time and money, it’s ultimately the right choice to do it right the first time rather than cutting corners and having to redo the work later.
Of course, the headliner and all the carpets have been completely reupholstered. The combination of the beautiful burgundy color and black carpets creates a truly stylish finish. The steering wheel and horn pad have also been replaced with brand-new ivory ones to match the interior.

The exterior, of course, has been fully repainted. The color scheme features an ivory body with a black roof. Additionally, during the repainting process, the rubber seals around the front and rear windows, the window frames, and the door seals were all replaced. Naturally, the bumpers and all chrome parts have been re-chromed, leaving the car in excellent condition.

For the suspension, all four tires feature whitewall tires. New wheel caps were installed. Although new ones have recently become available, they are very expensive and require painting, which is a bit of a hassle. Thanks to this, the wheels look sharp and the finish is truly beautiful. The shock absorbers and bushings were also replaced with new ones. The exhaust system features a custom-made stainless steel muffler.

For now, the car is in such good condition that no further work is needed. Considering the time and effort required to restore a car yourself, this Mercedes is actually a great value.

If you’re interested, why not come take a look at the car in person?
