Description

Let me introduce the Mercedes-Benz 450SLC.

The R107-series SL, which debuted in 1971, was introduced as the successor to the W113-series, the previous open-top two-seater model. As you may know, it went on to become a massive hit—arguably the longest-running model in Mercedes history—with production continuing for over 19 years. With the debut of the R107, production of the W111 280SE 3.5 Coupe—which had previously been produced as Mercedes’ luxury personal coupe—was discontinued.

To carry on the legacy of this traditional, high-end Mercedes two-door coupe, the five-seater SLC—known as the C107—made its debut at the same time. With a wheelbase extended by 360 millimeters from that of the SL and featuring a fixed roof, it offered superior ride comfort and interior space at high speeds thanks to its long wheelbase, setting it apart from the open-top models.

It initially launched as the 350SL, powered by a 3.5-liter V8 engine producing 200 PS, but in 1973, the 450SLC was introduced, featuring a 4.5-liter V8 with Bosch K-jetro injection and 225 horsepower.Paired with a 3-speed automatic transmission, it achieved a top speed of over 210 km/h, making it an exceptional high-speed tourer. This highly reliable and outstanding engine remained in use until the model was replaced by the 380SL and 500SL in 1980.

The interior features a blue checkered half-leather upholstery. The seats offer excellent support and are exceptionally comfortable, minimizing fatigue on long drives. This vehicle is in such excellent condition that it’s hard to believe it has over 70,000 km on the odometer; naturally, it remains in its original state and is in very good condition. The same applies to the dashboard and other interior components.

Originally sold as a new car at Yanase in Showa 54, this vehicle retains its original Silver Metallic paint, and all chrome trim remains in outstanding condition. The air conditioning works reasonably well, and the torque-rich, smooth ride produced by the 4.5L cast-iron engine offers a premium driving experience unique to the SLC.

The suspension features a double wishbone setup in the front and a semi-trailing arm independent suspension in the rear. It allows for a brisk pace even through surprisingly tight corners, and it has a curious handling characteristic: even if understeer occurs, simply turning the steering wheel further somehow makes it turn. The large steering wheel is a hallmark of Mercedes tradition.Needless to say, the braking performance is rock-solid, and the car remains just as reliable and reassuring to drive in any situation as ever. This is a

car you absolutely must see for yourself.
